Re: Twitching temp gauge

Thanks for replying. Just came from a short drive from local city central which I drive daily: consumption gauge worked ok when I drove there. Car was parked for few hours and when I started the car and drove back, consumption gauge did not move from far left position at all. One reason for this may...

Twitching temp gauge

Hi all, I must apologize this mega long post, but this is the best way to describe this cluster issue. I've read various topics and googled a lot about cluster issues, but the common answers have not solved my cluster issues. Everything works as it should even for a week at times. Then temp gauge ma...

Re: Soundproofing

Butyl mats aren't that heavy and for example Splen should be very light. What i've read, it's very similar to a mat that you put under your sleeping bag when sleeping in a tent. A tent mat? :D Asphalt mat is cheap but really heavy and a real pain to install. Cannot do anything without a heat gun. Sh...

Re: Soundproofing

Check sounddeadenershowdown.com before you purchase any of these products. If you use dynamat or an alternate product, also buy what this website calls Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier. I've used a lot of dynamat, alternative product named vibroplast and heavy asphalt mat. Although music sounds really good...

Ok, should have known that fitting the abs ring can't be that simple. Was the difference that big that heat expansion wouldn't be useful? I was getting desperate when fitting new rear wheel bearings, because it seemed that one side fitted really nice but the other side was a nightmare. Then used a b...

Can i get a new CV outer joint?

Right, so i bought a used halfshaft with abs. Then began to clean it up by removing boots and scraping the grease off. I started from the outer/wheel side joint because i thought that if the joint is faulty, i could return the halfshaft and get my money back. That's still an option. Even though it's...

Re: Is this a open diff or LSD?

Compared to LSD prices at german ebay, this was a bargain. I was searching for an open diff mainly due to LSD's high price level. Strange thing is that the seller was a bmw specialist, who has done thousands of trades. But they usually sell e30 parts. Maybe this model wasn't that familiar to them?

Re: Is this a open diff or LSD?

Alright, exactly what I've thought. I saw a pic of the insides of open e30 diff and that it didn't look nothing like the insides of this diff.

Sorry, I forgot to translate the names of my pics. No need to translate I guess, let the pics speak for themselves. :D

Is this a open diff or LSD?

So I bought a used diff from Germany. Was sold as an open diff, but after it arrived I'm suspect that it's a LSD diff. The inside looks identical with 325ix diff, which is a viscous locking diff. It seems that this diff is from e36 318ti (compact) because it seems identical with some diff pics found...

Re:

Right, finally got the "new" diff installed. It really makes a difference. There is little difference in acceleration, but it doesn't bother that much. Most noticeable difference is that with the old diff it was possible to use 5th at ~40 mph/60 kmh and keep steady speed. If I try to do this know, t...

engine_ear: Thanks for the equation. Time to do some calculus when home from work. Did some quick calculations with 1010 tires calculator. I don't know how to post an attachment, but there's the line "revs per mile". With the 185/60/14 tires the number is 914.6. With 205/50/15 the number is 901.6. A...

Re: 3.91 diff to 318i?

I tried to google a some sort of bmw revs calculator, but didn't find any. How did you calculate your numbers? I'll check the correct ratio next time I'm working on my car. Based on your numbers looks like it's the 4.41 diff. At the moment I have 185/60/14 but soon I'll be fitting 8x15 RM's with 205...

Re: 3.91 diff to 318i?

Thanks. I've looked the letters under the diff few years ago and iirc the diff is 4.1. I looked for the letter S, but surprise surprise it didn't have it. :) Maybe I should narrow my search to 3.91 diff. Bmwfans.info says that 316i French export models had 3.91 diff. Based on that, one might think t...

3.91 diff to 318i?

At the moment, my car has the original 4.1 diff. At about 60 mph, revs are ~3200. Imho, at those speeds the engine noise is quite annoying. When I press the clutch down at that speed and revs decline to about 2500, it's very much less noisy. This is the level where I'd like the revs to be. I don't d...

Sound deadening trunk compartment-is it a big difference?

Ok, so I have a 2dr facelift e30 M40. Technically stock, so no loud exhaust etc. Due to my recently revived interest for car audio, my sound deadening project has gone out of hands way more than I originally planned. But still I would like to have a quieter ride. Too late to back up now. I've alread...

Re: M40 radiator differences (non-aircon/with aircon)?

If someone wonders the same question, here is an answer about the fitment. So I installed today the new radiator. You can use all the original hoses. The bottom bush at the bottom of the radiator on the right hand side (in a UK car on the driver's side) fits ok to the original bracket. But as the ra...

Re: M40 radiator differences (non-aircon/with aircon)?

Thanks for the info. I'm from Finland. I just ordered a radiator for aircon e30 m40 and the order numbers are same with e30 with aircon and e36 with aircon ones at the store where I ordered it. I guess that it will fit alright. It seems that one possible problem for fluid leak is the place for doubl...

M40 radiator differences (non-aircon/with aircon)?

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. English is not my native language, so forgive me problems with my grammar. I've got a 318i with m40 engine. And my radiator keeps leaking more and more. I've taken it to parts couple times before and use sikaflex to seal it up. After that treatment it works o...
