Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue *Problem Found and Fixed*

OK, I was just refering to the affect on idle, not when pushing the engine.

Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue *Problem Found and Fixed*

Have you checked little things such as the oil filler cap seal and the oil dipstick seal - both severely affect the idle as well as the distributor cap contacts and rotor -
I clean mine up everything 3000km or so, this also has massive effect on smooth idle and engine livelyness.

oh, should be all good then!

My car had such a collection of different aged, manufactuers and so on - including different length springs! - that made up the front suspension, I guess now I'm into overkill !!

Might be a good idea to do both sides and both bushes then you have a fully balanced new front set up, never like the idea of different aged suspension parts - just a thought

If you have fuel pressure, sparks but non working injectors - I might suspect the injector wiring connector under the inlet manifold - is it correctly re fitted ?? as I guess you had to disconnect it
when you removed the head for skimming.

Re: how to test my cps , crank position sensor iffy ???

Yup, should read 540 ohms across the sensor, at the the sensor plug and at the ECU - but as the wiki states, a correct resistance reading does not mean the unit is good - it's not a bad idea to carry a spare anyway, it's small and is one of the things that will stop the car dead if it fails - same a...

I took the bonnet off - on the floor on top of some rugs - then used petrol and a scraper - quite quick but messy - you need a lot of kitchen roll too!

Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue

Were you able to test the fuel pressure with engine running? As you say if the problem slowly appeared it sounds mechanical, but a failing capacitor in the ECU shows errors over time - no one you can swap your ECU with for a quick test? I'm driving to Italy tomorrow from Dortmund - where are you? Pa...

Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue

I see from your first post the ICV is new ( is it real BMW ) - can you see the vane inside move if you take it out of the car and twist it quickly in your hand, can you feel it "clunking" have you washed it out with carb cleaner? maybe it is stuck? You don't say when this fault first appeared, after...

Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue

Can you let us know the ECU number, printed on the label -?

There's one I think the 381 that's known to blow ICV control diodes - bit of a long shot.

Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue

Can you check with ignition on you have 12v at pin 2 (centre) of the icv plug and you should have around 40ohms across pins 1 and 3 at the ICV and at the ECU across pins 4 and 22 when the ICV is plugged in - you say you have continuity at the ECU - you mean 0 ohms short circuit? Does the ICV buzz wh...

Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue

I would guess as you can get it to run by setting a "fake" idle using the butterfly, everything is fine except the ICV is "out of curcuit" probably a simple crappy connection somewhere - you just need to test all the points I suggest, and don't be diverted by things that are obviously OK - fuel pres...

Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue

I tried to follow the Bently at one time, but measuring the "gap" is a bit random, as far as I understand it, the screw stops the butterfly from actually coming into contact with the inner circumference of the throttle body - if it does touch, it can jam - so, minimum gap without touching. All the a...

Re: Help me identify the low idle on cold start issue

I would first test that all signals are reaching the ecu. You probably need a helper and a test meter for sure, drop your knee panel - disconnect your battery! and remove the ECU huge plug - pin numbers are marked but tiny! Blue plug - test at sensor then at ECU ( pin 45 and earth )) for the same re...

Re: Great way to end a days work

Just don't buy a cheap pump, you need an oem one such as VDO - I have a 60 quid cheapy off ebay you can hear it running two blocks away - does not inspire confidence.

+1 This is the simplest DIY job that can be done on the side of the road with a spanner and a screw driver.

I don't think that's far wrong, but if you have tools it's easy enough to do yourself - there's plenty of info in the wiki and elsewhere - can be done for the cost of the belt, pulley, water pump and camshaft front seal ( a good idea whilst your in there )

Simplest paint is specific colors of brake caliper enamel, fast drying rock hard and heat resistant, I've used this after cleaning and some K rust type treatment, paint on top, no piddling about with 2 pack, lasts for years, and my car does extreme mileage in all weathers.
