Re: E30 325iT 3:91 differential.
It's not unheard of for diffs to rust through - despite being about 8mm thick! I've had three over the years that have holed after bead blasting. Much lighter though! However, the diff does form part of the suspension (subframe has two mounts plus the diff bush) so technically a damaged backplate, b...

Re: Diffs and shafts
You really want a medium case LSD. the small case units are know for their ability to split the spool in two. If you MUST use it, replace the spool end cap with a steel one, they're on ebay. A proper 4.27 188mm LSD isn't a cheap thing to buy or build but if you can find a 188mm diff in that ratio, t...

Re: 330i - talk to me about flywheels and clutches
I have a Valeo (i think) single mass conversion kit on my 5 speed E46 330i. It uses a conventional (E36 M3 i think?) clutch, so none of that self adjusting bollocks. Cheaper than the OEM parts too. Jobs worth doing: Plastic clutch fork pivot - replace or upgrade to metal 5th / reverse gear detent pl...

You'll feel the bearing - rough as hell and notchy. And also probably metal debris around the oil somewhere.

I'd go along with that. New clips are available from BMW along with the output seals.

Re: Diff failure?
The number 1 cause of sudden diff failure is a lack of oil. If it was leaking, you've probably run the pinion bearing dry and that's now pretty angry and molten. My next step would be to scoop the oil from the bottom of the casing on a cleanish rag and check for metal debris to confirm this. It'll be...

We've been running a E36 318ti sport compact for a few years now and it's been the most reliable car i've had! It needed an exhaust, shocks and pads when we bought it and as it was doing the nurburgring and the alps soon after, it got the lot. Since then, aside from tyres, oil, filters and wipers it...

E46 sport touring shocks - what to replace with?
My daily bus is currently a rather handsome E46 330i sport touring. Recently it's been getting very twitchy at the rear, especially on wet manhole covers. On or off power too, so I suspect shocks. What is good to go for on these shiny new fangled beasties? I have Eibach springs to go on already but ...

Re: E36 m3 diff
Drop me a PM on here if you need a hand. To identify what E36 diff you have: The 3.2 M3 Evo diff looks like it came from a tank and has no rubber mountings on the aluminium backplate. Also the plates on the side of the diff have 8 bolts on. The 3.0 M3 diff has two integral diff mounting bushes on th...

Re: Leaking LSD Half Shafts
Check the breather on the backplate isn't blocked. It's the small hole on the side of the tube, poking up from the top of the backplate.
If these get blocked, oil will vomit out everywhere regardless of whether new or old seals are fitted....

Re: E36 diff ratio in E30 casing?
Its not just nuts and bolts as you have to ensure the mesh and preload are correct. Not all 188 CW/P are compatible with all 188 diff spools, as I explained to you on the phone the other day Tom and im 99% certain you will not be able to fit that 2.93 CW/P to your 3.91 LSD unit Correct :) 3.15 is t...

Ah you'll be wanting some PRC fuel tank sealant then! Dom snaffled some leftovers from his work somewhere around 8 years ago, that's what's keeping the tank on a certain E30 fuel tight.....! It's better than steel!
Much better than that granville rubbish.

2-3 months is a very short timescale... I'd be wary of pushing to get it done quickly as corners will be cut and this deserves to be a very thorough job!
