im from Australia and got them through a guy who sources bm parts from europe. the company that made them is SIDEM in belgium.
problem is as with all internet based transactions. no one wants to know or cant be contacted to discuss.

tie rod lock plates dont fit

i got some new tie rods but the knuckle on the rack end ball joint is bigger than the old tie rods so the lock plates dont fold over enough. anyone else had this problem?
the tie rods are from a belgium company and their parts calalogue does not include the lock plates.

this happened on mine too. thought about welding but was told it would just happen again. i un bolted the motor, raised it up a bit on a trolley jack and swaped the whold subframe out. the power steer has to come out too and the whole thing was a pita. sorry to hear.

a seal kit is available from the US. i have come across it on a website. bmw do not carry anything for the power steering rack. sorry i dont have any part no.s but it does exist somewhere.

you guys got it lucky over there. im from aust and although you can get lots of stuff easy, a lot still has to come from germany (6-8 weeks!!!)
the parts guy at my local dealer came out to check my vin for something and said ''oh, didnt know they made these in a convertible''

what broke on your cross member? mine had the sway bar tabs snap off! they are all the same as i got one off a 323i and ive got a 320 cab. be careful to support both the engine and the power steer rack as on mine the rack pinion got damaged just dangling about as we swaped the xmembers over, and i h...

changed mine from a dead empty rack and it was just on 1lt. youll have enough to change it yearly for the next five years. now thats preventative maintainance :D

2nd hand racks only come with a 3month warranty dont they?
$170 for one - thats a pretty good price. I just swaped one out on my e30 and it was $300 second hand from parramatta prestige.

i just finished fitting a rack from a 323 (84-86?) onto my 320 (89). fit no probs... except the father in law likes getting things to line up by hitting them with hammers and we broke the mount on the new rack :cry: we then rebuilt the old rack with the parts from the new rack and fitted it back in....

are you sure they do a seal kit for the rack, ive just phoned my local dealer and they say theres nothing listed for the rack at all in the way of spare parts. :cry: so you guys have this kit available in the UK. I recently changed out the crossmember on my 320 cab and now I appear to have disturbed the rack as it leaks from the top of the pinion where the steering column / couplings fit in. ive been told there is a seal under the plastic dust cover on the top of the pinion that can be replaced. question is:...

thanks for the replys, no I dont drive like an idiot althought the ARB mounting points could have been damaged when I bought the car about 18 months ago. could it be a shot water pump? grab the fan blades and jiggle from side to side and see if there is a lot of movement.
NOTE: do not have engine running when grabbing fan blades!!

I only want to use it for roadside punctures. would be just my luck there are different kinds. Just checked realOEM.com and there does appear to be different part numbers for jacks between convertible and sedan.
Can anyone confirm this?

jacking up the car

not sure if im completely stupid but trying to use the jack, the side of the jack hits the side of the car before it actually fits under the car!! what am I doing wrong or is there something missing off my jack?
it says it fits 320i and my car is a 320i convertible.
