Re: Would you buy an e36 with 223k on the clock
my e36 is just shy of 180k now, and i bet if i knocked 100K off the mileage noone would ever guess. how it's been driven and maintained has far more bearing on the condition of an old car than the figures on the clock! however, i bet if i tried to sell my car 99% of people who looked at the ad woul...

I buy Total every now and then, I don't bother with PBMW. Subscribed to Retro Car as it's much more interesting and has a nice mix of cars. +1. Total BMW for Tech Stuff, Retro Car for the features. Browse BMW Car though never enough to justify buying. PPP on occasion. The 318iS 4 door was close to ...

Thanks for all your help. I'm now older and far wiser. Good news - engine earth is great (virtually 0 resistance) and power is going to the starter. Bad news - it must be the starter then. Convinced it must be the starter I gave it a harder thump, and hey presto it turned over. Got it into my garage...

Re:
mine dose this on occasions.... manly when the voltage drops a little i get it to go every time by jumping a short wire with a spade connector on the starter soloniod directly to the batt wire on the starter you need to take the starter signal wire off first though Thanks. Had decided to try that b...

Re:
I'm so hoping it's not!!
It was the randomness that made me wonder if it wasn't. I guess I need to check earths as well.
Would the pin shorting bypass all relays and switches (thus proving it to be the starter?)

Re: Help - Stranded
check for a spark then check the pump gives a buzz. take a plug out and see if it's wet or has a spark. plug the removed sparky plug back into the lead and get your mate top hold it when you crank the donk over.if he does the moon walk check the fuel. Problem is it won't crank, so I won;t get a spa...

Re: Help - Stranded
Have you done the basics? checked the fuses? made sure the relay's under the bonnet are in and secure? (give the white one a tap with a screwdriver handle) any loose/broken wires around the starter? Yes done that, removed and cleaned pins on all of them and given them a shake and a tap. When I turn...

Help - Stranded
Fortunately on my drive. Got the 320 out tonight ahead of the Ace Cafe tomorrow mornig and popped to the shop down the road. Started fine after problems a few weeks ago. Once stopped wouldn't start. Tried hammer on starter motor, no joy. Tried jumping it, and no joy then suddenly, randomly success. ...

Thanks for the answers, plenty to have a look at.Brianmoooore wrote:When it's acting up, try cranking it by shorting together pins 10 and 14 of the diagnostic socket. Always the first move when you have cranking problems.
The one above is curious though - what am I doing when I connect those two pins?

Won't start, won't turn over
My 320i decided not to start this afternoon when I pulled up, it started OK and was fine first time restarting but dead second time. I refitted the negative terminal to battery tighter then all OK, however the next time even that didn't work. Tried jumping it off my 328 and seemed dead then after th...

Finally bought an E30
After years of fancying an E30 I finally succumbed after the recent Top Gear episode and found myself and 320i Cab despite promising myself a year without a second car. It's not my daily driver, I've got a very leggy E36 328 for that, it's purely a weekend car so just waiting for the good weather to...

Re: fuel prices have got the better of me......
To get the £22k this new turd cost you will have had to earn over £30k - which you then spend on an "asset" that will lose circa 50% of its value over the next 3-4 Years. Now there's financial planning for you  On the flipside if people didn't buy new cars I wouldn't be able to pick them up f...
