Re: 318i idle problem
I also did notice that the cap on the afm mixture adjustment screw was missing, so I guess there is a chance that it has been fiddled with - the car had no history when I got it (which I feel like I'm coming to regret)

Re: 318i idle problem
Of course you are correct Brian. :o: Technically I've got myself a workaround which of course just sorts out the current symptoms and does nothing to sort out the true cause. When I've worked out what the TPS look s like and where it's hiding I'll try and pinpoint the root cause (apart from me fiddl...

Re: 318i idle problem
I've had another good look around and everything looked properly connected. I cleaned the connector directly below the air intake but still had issues. In the end I adjusted the throttle stop screw thing which brought the idle down. It drives nicely and the revs settle down properly when I stop at j...

Re: 318i idle problem
The haynes mentioned the TPS but I couldn't work out where it is or even what I'm looking for. A plug is fairly obvious but there are a couple around the throttle body. May just check them all.to be on the safe side

Re: 318i idle problem
I tried that but it didn't seem to do anything.
Strangely it now idles at 900 after starting but as soon I have driven anywhere it idles 1500 or so.

318i idle problem
Hi 89 318i M40 I thought I'd be clever and replace my air intake rubber pipe but in doing so I have mucked up my idle. :( It used to idle at 800 revs, but after changing the pipe it now idles at 1500. The idle is steady, just high. The pipe is on properly and there are no leaks that I can find. It s...

Parts needed - fuel filler area
Hi,
I'm after a couple of bits:
51711884358 - hopefully the rubber gasket/seal around the filler neck behind the flap.
and
16121180402 - rubber pipe between the filler pipe and the tank
Thanks

Re: 318 M40 won't start
Charging battery but had a half full old un. Couldn't get the pump to go via the yellow relay but after a good (but slow) crank pulled a plug out and it had petrol on it (how wet should it be? it wasn't very wet but definately had petrol on it). Fuse 11 is okay.

Re: 318 M40 won't start
WellI think i found the relay - on the bulkhead there was a white one and a yellow one. Tried the white one and got the faint noise, but on trying again I'm getting nothing. I have checked the fuse and all was fine there (and swapped it to be doubly sure).

Sparks all present and correct.
Is the fuel pump relay one of the ones on the bulkhead?

318 M40 won't start
Hey peoples. Went to start my car this evening and it won't! When I left work it started but hunted up and down at idle but I drove home okay. When I went to go out tonight it wouldn't start - it stuttered and then stalled. Throttle made no difference, and it did this a few times. Now it just turns ...

Re: Intermittant Rev Counter, Econometer,
I only asked as the speedo on my last car (a 90 Peugeot 309) was spot on when I used the nav.

Re: Intermittant Rev Counter, Econometer,
I think I confused myself - if my speedo is saying I'm doing 30 when sat nav says 26 then isn't that over reading? Which sounds better as I'd only be holding traffic up and not exceeding the limit.
I'll have to have a bash at dismantling the dash next weekend to check the si board and batteries

Intermittant Rev Counter, Econometer,
My rev counter and econometer seem to be having issues - Both seem to play up after the car has bee driven for an hour or so and either - both stop working at the same time, or - econometer stops at its off position (past the 50 mark) while the rev conter works, or - econometer stops and the rev cou...

Re: Cool Runnings
I found another topic about low temp where Brian said what is more important is that it gets up to normal temp quickly.
Presuming that the first quarter is my normal temp, how long should the engine take to warm up to normal?
Or is that like asking how long is a piece of string?

Re: Cool Runnings
Can I double check where the thermostat is? Is it below the fan on the front of the block? Would I get to it from underneath?

Re: Cool Runnings
This could be typical of my luck if it is the thermostat- Mr Haynes seems to imply it could be this as well and declares its a coolant out and fan off job - and I've only just got it back from having the cambelt changed.

Cool Runnings
I have a couple of cooling/heating queries, and I'm not sure if they are related: Situation - bought my 89 318i touring with no history (felt a bit brave!). On the way home, found out there wasn't a lot of coolant in the system as it rapidly got hot  , so stopped and let everything cool down be...
