Re: Diffs: large case, small case

Thanks. I took a closer look today.
The diff from my 318iS is 6 bolt.
The 325 diff is 8 bolt.
As expected.

Trying to locate M42 coolant pipe on Real OEM.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/c/m/6.png I'm trying to find out the part number for the moulded pipe that's shown between the 4 and 6 in the diagram. I mean the solid moulded part that comes out of the block with 2 other pipes Teeing off it. I can't find it on RealOEM. I'd assume that it was u...

Diffs: large case, small case

I've got a 4.1 small case diff from my 318iS.
I recently removed a 3.9 LSD that was from a 325 sport. It was fitted to another 318iS. It looks identical to me.

I thought that the 325 had a large case and the 318is was a small case diff. Do the housings look the same?

As per the title, was the same prop shaft used for all of the E30 models?

Quick track rod end query.

Am I right in assuming that to remove the rod end you loosen the nut and then the whole rod end should unscrew from the shaft that sticks out of the end of the rack?

Value of a 3.7, 3.9 and 4.1 LSD.

If there were 3 LSDs in good condition and inspected/refurbished what would a reasonable selling price be? Would a 3.7 ratio be worth as much as a 4.1 ratio?

Re: Soft suspension wanted! Awful ride!

Give the set up a week or two and see how it feels then.
I fitted a Koni kit to an Astra MK2 years ago and it was horrific, so bad I was going to take it all back out. After a week or two it was fine.

Either I got used to it or they dampers softened up a bit.

I think so. The top end was rebuilt by PacerPete just before I bought it. Bottom end is original I believe. I reckon it would have got beyond 300K easily. Sweet engines, just sound like a bag of nails.

Re: Car conundrum

The bolt was one of mine. I changed the chain, sprockets and guides just after I bought it because it rattled a bit. It still rattled afterwards, so I just got used to it.

I helicoiled all of the cam cover bolts too and threadlocked them. They came loose every other month otherwise.

Car conundrum

I've owned my 318iS for 4 years now and taken it from 120K to 320K. I've really enjoyed driving it and have spent a fair bit on parts servicing it and upgrading the suspension and a few other things (Z3 rack, Z3 shifter, 3.9 LSD, £1K spent on suspension parts inc Bilstein kit, poly bushes etc). Last...

I've got the right size helicoil kit for the thread. But I wonder if I should take the head off and get the area machined flat. Otherwise the guide runner might not sit straight.

Urgent part - need an M42 fixed chain guide!

I've got my engine in bits and need to replace the fixed chain guide for the M42 (long guide). The top bolt worked loose and the guide has a bit missing.
I was just wondering if anyone had one somewhere in the UK so we could collect for cash and use it to fix the engine.

Re: 318iS rattle from timing chain/cam cover area.

I've just taken it all apart and found the problem.
The top bolt on the fixed chain guide had worked loose. Part of the guide had cracked off and the bolt and runner were rattling around in the case.

318iS rattle from timing chain/cam cover area.

I decided to investigate an engine rattle last night. It's not very loud when driving. Originally sounded like a heat shield bolt had come loose or similar. Anyway, with the bonnet open and the engine idling it became apparent that the noise was coming from the timing chain near the top of the engin...

Oil grade for 318iS LSD.

I went to GSF today and they didn't have a clue what oil I should use, nor did APD. I called in at BMW and they said Castrol XJ. When I had the diff checked over the specialist said to use some grade of Valvoline. So just wondering what stuff to buy.

Well, the scrappy pump is still running fine after 1700 miles. I've also got a new pump in the car for the day it expires. It's not a complete unit - it's the pump part, some flexi pipe, jubilee clips and crimps. Genuine Bosch repair kit.

318iS - 40mpg on 1700 mile trip.

Just for "fun" I noted all the mpg on a trip I've just done to the South of France. This is based on driving at a near steady speed on motorways, though I did slow on large hills to keep the indicated instantaneous mpg above 30mpg Mway at 70mph, plus 10 minutes at around that plus 30: 39mpg Mway at ...
