if its a charging problem! altenator belt, are you getting a similar problem with anything else thats applying load to the circuit? ie headlamps.

i was getting a random banging noise from mine about two years ago which turned out to be the exhaust, theres not much scope for play with the back box an a couple of what looked to be fine but turned out to be doggy exhaust rubbers upset its carma, an drove me round the bend....

as brian suggested try the throttle position sensor first, then have a stab at the fuel pump relay if you think that it might be causing a problem, their quite easy to test if you have access to a pocket multi meter. do you know when the fuel filter was last changed? and check, if you have access to...

hello mate,do you know when the fluid was last changed as it has a shelf life and will cause symptoms like a noisey pump if not changed at service intervals.check its colour,if its gone brownish its well past its sell buy date...

hello mate,with your car being a 318 and not an I, i presume its a carb model with a mechanicaly driven pump off the cam?. does the car hunt or miss at all on restart?

hello mate, the clocks in your dash are powered by an idependant battery on what they call an si board,it maybe that the battery is failing,try to beg borrow or steal (not litrally) a set of clocks to try prior to buying a new one as they were 90quid without fitting the last time i priced one.. hope...

Hello mate,it sounds like the enriching devise is failing.(choke in old money),again as daimlerman suggests blue temp sensor.. as for the low idle when the AC is on, that sounds like a charging problem. have you checked the belts?

have you checked the reference lable on the pillar beside the drivers door? this as on mine states the tyre sizes an profile difference, also the bar pressure to be run. what ever you decide make sure you run the same pair of tyres on each axle.

hello mate, it should state on the side of the drivers door what size tyres you can run on your model, mine states between 195 an 205 but cant remmember if it mentioned a profile difference..

ok m8,it seems to me as if its an excess of fuel judging by the plumes of smoke, the car then plays hunt the cylinder for a while as its trying to clear, its frightening on my cardi wallet watching over £5 a gallon disappear into the air without a turn of the wheel. ps as a new member im gratefull...

HI, had a simillar problem with my e30, which turned out to be a tiny split in the fuel pipe running to the spray rail, the smell as you said was worse on start up, as when it was warm the fuel from the leak evaporated quicker..
