Re: Regular Problems

Righto, looks like the dizzy cap could be an issue unless an M535 radiator is fitted. I think it has that as I noticed the cap wasn't touching the rad.

Looks like I'm going to have to man up and leave a deposit. (:

Re: Regular Problems

That's interesting to hear. My massive concern was that I was gonna have to remove the radiator or jack the front of the engine up to replace the distributor cap. Coupled with that I read a fair amount about the fact that it was not possible to detach the gearbox from the engine in-situ, and of cour...

Regular Problems

Hi chaps,

I'm looking at buying an M30 converted car. What are the key obstacles going to be in terms of regular maintenance?

I.E. Servicing, changing plugs, leads, distributor caps, clutches etc.

Anything catastrophic that's going to put me straight off the idea?

Thanks!

Re: BMW E21 323i

I generally think ****. Most people with plenty of money and buy nice new expensive cars are *****. I was MOT'ing a Ferrari 360 a while back, I was trying to get it through the emissions by revving it at nearly 4k as that's when it met the limits. The guy came in the workshop F'ing and blinding at ...

Re: Oil Level Fault

sorry my mistake :o: Not at all, appreciate your efforts. I'll have to go on the hunt next time I'm viewing the car for the number of pins. The base car is an '88 325is, but I don't know if it could be calculated on age and model? You may well be on to something here though, this connector would be...

Re: Oil Level Fault

That's true enough - I viewed the car for about two hours though and drove it on a decent test drive during which time I didn't notice any oil leaking on the floor or anywhere visible when wiggling underneath the engine. Would a dead oil pump not produce an oil pressure light, rather than a level li...

He was getting the same issue on the M20 engine he had in there beforehand.

You do, of course make a valid point. And if that's the case, I'd be a happy chappy. I just want to know the worst case scenario, so I can budget for it and appropriately knock him down on price. :)

Re: Oil Level Fault

That's certainly the first thing I'd try. That and dropping the sump pan and cleaning the gunk out of it. (Presuming this isn't an engine out job on an M30)

You'd have hoped a replacement sensor would be sorted from when he put it in though, no?

Oil Level Fault

Looking at a car at the minute which has an oil level light that intermittently comes on. Speaking to the owner, he's changed both the top 'check' unit and the sensor itself to no avail. Worth noting that the oil level is fine, and it doesn't look particularly sludge-y. This leads me to the concept ...

Glad it wasn't just me that thought it was a bit pfaff.

Yeah, I did hear the booster/cylinder having a fit when I was frantically pumping the brakes on the test drive - felt like it came from the left side of the car.

Re: Test Drive Observations

Excellent, good info. Steering felt very lithe and provided a lot off feedback in a 'movement' sense. It felt connected to the front wheels too, but it was very light and didn't have much in the way of resistance. Admittedly, I'm not used to it, which wouldn't help. Haha, they were both sports with ...

Test Drive Observations

Hullo again all. I've got around to driving a couple of e30s and just have a few of observations coming in from other cars that I would like verifying as to whether they're normal or not. Steering. The steering felt very light, and somewhat vague. Is this normal and is there anything I can do about ...

It's annoying; everything that goes wrong with it/requires maintenance costs either 3, or 600 quid. It's not been like it for the past 12 months, but 6-8, certainly. I can live with it prior to having a mortgage, but in getting such you pretty much commit yourself to financial chastity and forego su...

Re: £3k Madness?

Mmm, interesting. I'm currently dropping about £300 a month on scheduled & unscheduled maintenance, so errr. With hope, it's gonna be less than that. Especially if I can do some (ambitiously, most) of the work myself. I'm not going down the e36/46 route; they're just not cars that appeal to me. Abou...

Oh that's really good to hear. I'd be up for giving some of the basic stuff a go, maybe on a couple of panels I found from the scrapyard to play with.

With the preventative maintenance, where are the costs in what I'd likely have to replace?

Thanks Jimbob, I'd appreciate that. Rot is the primary and most terrifying issue for me. I can't weld, and good, trustworthy metal fabricators/body-shops are hard to find. That's not particularly good news either. I am looking for something to tinker with and fix myself, rather than my current car w...

Thanks Brian, are there any garages in the Hampshire area that you would recommend for the purposes of carrying out such an inspection. Out of interest, what does 'tidy' mean? I'm guessing the idea of having no rust what-so-ever is a little optimistic? Also, again, purely out of interest, what shoul...

For 3k, from what I've seen, you should be able to pick up a very dece...
