Guys, the usual method of measuring speaker cable size is the AWG scale - but the lower the number, the thicker the cable. Look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_wire_gauge So 22awg is much thinner than the 12awg. The 12awg is actually pretty thick, and a bit overkill for most speaker appl...

It's fairly pointless just finding something with lots of bass and treble - unless that's how you want your system to sound - bass and treble is only part of the story. People don't realise just how most modern CDs are recorded/mastered. They are aimed at the mass market, and made to sound good on c...

Its all about preference, Alpine treble a lot, Infinity are bassier, ill have a fish around tomorrow see if I can find some others. What type of music/headunit/price are you looking for. Falls asleep. Moz I have a set of those infinities - and they are quite the opposite in fact! When install...

First off, don't buy any of the unbranded cheap amps from ebay or anywhere else. You'd be better off with something 2nd hand. You can pick up a nice 2x50w rms apline, kenwood, JBL etc for £20 - £40, and it will knock the socks off those chinese cheap amps. BTW, those amps claim 400w, but only ha...

Re: Valve clearances???
Well a bigger clearance isn't going to gain you any performance, quite the opposite infact - the valves are opening .05mm less. It will probably also make your car tap more. That's not the case in my experience. M20s much prefer loose valve clearances. It may "tap" a little, but an M20 with "audibl...

Always adjust M20 valve clearances to 0.35mm engine fully hot. Since when? Better cold and although BMW say 0.25. But i believe 0.30 is better! In my experience, .35 hot is the best method, and as stated also accounts for uneven expansion. Back in the day, I would regularly have to sort out running...

It's impossible to diagnose a lean mixture from a distance - although it is possible, it's unlikely that you'll do any damage from normal driving. As for the tappets - the only time I've ever adjusted them cold is when it's been a rebuild, so cannot be run up to temp. Always adjust M20 valve clearan...

When you mean 'throttle wide open' does that just mean full foot down on accelerator?
Should also have said, (as above) is there a spark at the plug when it's removed?

The blue sensor can/will seriously affect fuelling if faulty, but IME, they are often replaced regardless "just in case" - they are cheap enough. Sounds like you may be flooded. New plugs, FULLY charged batt, and start with your throttle wide open. Keep cranking if it is firing, don't do short burst...

The skin effect does have an impact but only really at high frequencies (and the effect is quite significant at frequencies approaching 25-30kHz), but as i said to the layman in a noisy car it would not be noticable. blah blah blah boring!!! mrlee I'm not saying that skin effect doesn't exist, only...

I think that's right! I'm not too sure about the starter (term 50) connection - is that going back to the ECU? I'm a little rusty on the older stuff, but I do recall that the cranking signal does go back to the ECU - in which case it should be ok. I would connect the earth and the cranking signal fi...

mrLEE, you are absolutely correct that there is a lot more to electrical cables than just ohms law - much of which I have long since forgotten. What I am fairly sure of, however, is that capacitance, inductance and the skin effect of cables does not even come into play when considering the frequency...

Re: What type of cable for sub to amp?
I think you need to go back and read ohms law again :) You can't really go too big or fat with speaker cable (or any cable for that matter). You can however go too thin. If the wire is too thin, it will not be able to pass enough current, and will get hot. If you take it to the extreme, it will act...

Put them where they sound best - simple as. A good rule of thumb is that you should at least have a direct line of sight to them. Fitting them low down doesn't mean that they won't sound good - it may pull the sound stage down though. The theorectical best position is as close to the mids as possibl...

Not all tweeters suit the same location. Make sure that you have plenty of wire on them, get some blu-tac and experiment with different locations - footwell firing upwards, on mirror backings, and at different heights on the a pillar. Try one location for a few days, then change them and see how it a...

I can't advise you about the front > rear power cable, as I haven't done mine yet, however I wouldn't think it's too difficult, as some E30s have the batt in the boot - so there should be a clear route through. Check around the bulkhead for grommets. By using door builds (especially for the same siz...

If I was installing into a saloon, I would almost certainly fit an infinite baffle sub in the parcel shelf. It would be a fair bit more work to install, but would sound clearer and more integrated, plus you wouldn't need so much power to really get it moving. You have to check the specs of the sub b...

Yep - pretty much any wire will be fine - there's practically no current flowing in the circuit. You could either leave the resistor temporarily connected, until you get the value right, or make it so that it is interchangeable using crimp connectors. Don't forget that there are 2 wires going to the...
