"Pinking" and other problems
Hi guys we need help. Got the e36 M42 engine into the e30 and it's running. The problem is that under load the engine is knocking/pinking etc and sounds like a diesel at tickover. Now the e36 version uses different cams from the e30 version, so I'm wondering if it's the different cams causing the pr...

Starter doesn't turn on the key
Need help guys. The starter in the 318iS doesn't turn on the key. The ignition lights come on etc. Got the starter to turn the engine by connecting it up to the battery direct, so......... Is there a fusable link in the wiring to the ignition or anywhere else for me to check ?? Maybe a relay ?? Chee...

Re: Using an M42 from an e36
The M42 on the e36 is a single belt, hence why I said you have to swap the bottom pulley ;)

Re: Using an M42 from an e36
I dunno. Depends if the mounts on your engine are the same as the e30 version of the M42 lump (too many numbers here !!!) You would need to replace the sump with the e30 version. Again, I dunno if the blocks for the engines are all the same. If so then you could probably use all the bits from your c...

Re: Using an M42 from an e36
The early ones use an M42 engine. But there are subtle differences. Like those I listed above and also the crankcase ventilation system is setup differently. You basically have to take the e36 M42 lump, rip everything off except the head and rocker cover, and then replace all the e36 stuff you remov...

Using an M42 from an e36
Just thought I'd give you guys who are thinking of using an e36 M42 for your 318iS a heads up. We didn't get many pics taken as we were too busy bathing in oil, but here is a list of parts that you need to swap. The sump and Oil pickup The engine mounts The induction system including manifold The ex...

Re: The 318iS...before it's engine broke !!!
95K was the mileage, but I wouldn't worry. We swapped the engines today. Still gotta wire everything back up etc. Will do that tommorrow. Anyway, I had a look at the engine that broke. There is evidence of a rebuild ( I've rebuilt lots of Alfa engines so can spot the signs ;) ) and it is clear that ...

I think it's the lip that some have fitted to the front of the bonnet, but not sure. Yeah the car is really clean. Can't find any rust at all. Even the join at the inner wingsand bulkhead is still gleaming white. Just unfortunate that it's chain engine decided to snap it's chain. Dunno why yet. Once...

yeh does it on the leads thought ? That doesn't matter as #1 plug is at the front of the engine  Just needed to know which coil pack fired which plug. Thanks again. It says 1,2,3,4 on them (on the plastic cover) Ok thanks for that :D I don't have access to the car as it's in my mates garage so I couldn't have a look. Halfrauds used to do some leads that were coloured red. Think they were some sort of "Universal" stuff with all different lengths to fit every engine. Dunno how good they actually are though..........

This is the only pic I have of the car. It's from the original sellers ad. Everything standard except for the delocking of the doors. It does look as though fluid of some sort has got in and contaminated the friction plate by the ring around the centre of it. Got a bit of a problem already, even before I start with the 318iS engine swap :o: My mate (who owns the car) has been helpful and removed a lot of stuff from the broken engine so we can get on with the swap on saturday. Anyway, he removed the spark plug leads and didn't take note which plug goes wi...

Re: 316 M10... Worth saving?
3 years ago my mate was given an E plate 316 for nothing. It was in better nick than the car in those pictures. About a year ago, he couldn't give it away to anyone else so it ended up being scrapped. It was still in better condition than the one in the pics. So it's probably worth as much as the 19...

The diff is from a 318i Auto.....which is why we are selling a 318i Auto with a noisy diff ;) It's an M42 lump. Why make the job hard by fitting a different lump which'd need the ECU and all sorts of funky wiring alterations done...I presume !!! My mates iS was running great when he bought it a coup...

It's all in place. Next weekend we are putting the engine from a 50K e36 into the dead 318iS which snapped it's chain. Still to swap the sump over but that's no problem. Got new gaskets etc ordered for that and for the manifold swap and other stuff needing done. A new clutch is going in and a 4.45 d...

Re: 318 IS, PERFORMANCE CHIP, NOT RIGHT!
Hmmm..OK. I don't think it would be able to learn information like that, as it could then compensate for a dodgy ICV. If that was the case you'd never have to replace a broken ICV, just reset the ECU and it'd dial out the fault if you see what I mean. But as I say, I'm no expert on the e30 or it's e...

Re: 318 IS, PERFORMANCE CHIP, NOT RIGHT!
OK I understand what you mean now, but then it wouldn't have to "learn" anything for idle either, as it would just take the readings from the sensors and apply the fueling according to the map on the chip. Admittedly I've only dealt with cars with lambda probes and what you say makes sense to me, no...

Re: Overheating whilst racing
The radiator doesn't have to be leaking. If the fins are rotten you may only have half a radiator actually working. One thing you can do to help cooling is put the heater up full blast and the fan on full pelt. My 156, although has a new radiator etc fitted, gets very hot when I track it despite it ...

Re: 318 IS, PERFORMANCE CHIP, NOT RIGHT!
That means, at minimum, the ECU still has to learn the fueling for across the rev range, not just at idle. And as you say, it also has to learn the fueling according to engine temp AND according to air temp. The sensors all act together as you know, so the ECU has to learn fueling for all sorts of c...

Re: 318 IS, PERFORMANCE CHIP, NOT RIGHT!
I agree with the 2 posts above. They can't properly test a chip on a USA spec engine for the Euro market. It would be impossible to tune chip for use with 95 or 98 Ron petrol on an engine running 91. These chips won't give the power gains specified on every engine because, as said above, all engines...
