I like the sound of willnz suggestion with the blade, maybe a couple of taps with a rubber mallet and it might just move out without ripping the sump gasket with it.

Hi guys thanks for the replies. It's not the filter housing that has the gasket problem it is the oil pump housing that runs off the crank shaft.

bump bump bump... I checked the resistance in the HT leads last night, all between 5.6 and 6.3K ohms, the coil to dissy cap lead was around 2K ohms.
