Stalling on idle/slowing down

Hi all 1990 M40B18 Having an issue whereby the car stalls when slowing down and sometimes when idle it will gradually drop the revs and stall. Replaced TPS, blue temp sensor, CPS, ICV cleaned and tested for resistance, AFM replaced, HT leads and distributor replaced. Some of these were done as maint...

Re: ICV Hassle

I also have issus with the Lowe one! Fitted it and worked fine for a week then started to stall when slowing down. As it gets hotter it stalls whenever it should idle, to the point you turn it over and it will stall if not revved. Ordered an OEM used one now, will see if that fixes it.

I went for a boot build and wrapped it all in grey vinyl. The weight of it keeps it in place! IMG_20221025_081037_882.jpg IMG_20221025_081037_882.jpg The angled vents are for hot air. Re: 318i Exhaust manifold heat shield advise

Hi! I never even got to the stud snapping stage as ended up with 2 broken rocker cover bolts! The M40 does not generate such huge amounts of heat that the exhaust manifold heatshield will be adversely affected by the wear and tear showing in your photo. I just painted mine carefully with black VHT p...

I forgot to mention the polished metal was given a coat of Gtechniq wheel armour I had left over from my wheels. Megs wax on the rest to keep the bay beading and easier to clean in the long run. Thanks

Re: 1990 318i completed exterior and engine clean up/resto

Hi Alex Thank you! It is aftermarket, the original was NLA at the time although I hear it is now available from BMW. I have been really impressed with 303, I use it on all plastics now but I originally used it to protect the dash from cracks but it gives such a nice finish I ended up trying it on ot...

Re: 1990 318i completed exterior and engine clean up/resto

It had been a while since I'd had an M40 apart so I labelled it all when removing to make it easier when reassembling. I did whilst furloughed last year so had plenty of time l, not something that I would have done if I needed the car urgently as I would have ended up rushing to finish! PM me if you...

Re: 1990 318i completed exterior and engine clean up/resto

Hi TDK

The engine was degreased but the metal parts were all removed and wire wheeled and then polished to create a smooth finish. The smaller more detailed areas were hand finished with metal polish and varying grades of wire wool.

Thanks

Love it! I have chrome bonnet guides and rollers, would you do a commission piece dipstick? Nowhere near your level of shiny but I have polished the inlet manifold and rocker.

Water spotting only usually occurs if the sun pops out when the car is wet causing a slight acid etch to form from the droplets. Quick detailer afte you've dried the car or as you dry it will help but as Satan said, a good wax layer will help a lot. Meguiars Ceramic Hybrid Wax after washing is also ...

Re: Cup holder

Small update - removed it and used a taller piece of wood to not only fill the gap but steady the overall unit when removing a can/bottle. IMG_20200919_210925_432.jpg IMG_20200919_210925_431.jpg This was refitted with the Febi version of the cup holder, a lot stronger than the eBay clones. Thanks

Re: Cup holder

Hi Mart I first rough installed it with a cheaper eBay clone just so I knew how much to trim and where to fit etc. I then replaced it with a genuine Febi item as it has much stronger, thicker gauge springs. The cheap clones are quite delicate but OK if you seldom use the car. The final fit version I...

Re: Cup holder

I think there is more depth available on non AC cars as I recall their being less housing on them under the dash, could be wrong though. Depth is the only big issue when trying to fit a cup holder in an E30.

Re: Cup holder

That actually looks quite stealth, I've seen some really bad ones in the past. That's what I liked about them, blend in with the rest of the interior. Centre console front section is easily removed so I have a spare if I ever want to go back to factory. The cup holder could be removed by using some...
