Re: Fault codes
Forgot to mention: Fret not if Motronic gives a 1211 code (as long as yours is an ECE/cat ready vehicle without a cat & o2 sensor), this is perfectly normal and just means Motronic isn't receiving an o2 sensor signal. It will therefore be running using the open loop fuelling map and obviously not in...

Re: Fault codes
From experience the stomp test works on the 17x and 38x ecu's (I find it easier to operate the throttle linkage under the bonnet as you have to open & shut it really quickly, 5 times within approx 2 seconds). I'm surprised it doesn't work on a 16x ecu as I've looked it up and they are Motronic 1.3, ...

Re: Spark plugs M20
ZGR5A are meant for later (approx '87 on) 320 & 325 and have a projected nose so the spark is placed further into the air/fuel mixture, apparently increasing efficiency and having the added benefit that the tip is cooled by the incoming air/fuel mixture during the induction stroke to a greater degre...

Does anyone know of a good place in/near Colchester, Essex to get my 731 cylinder head refaced/resurfaced in readiness for fitment to the eta lump I've finally fitted to my old girl?
Or should I just set to it with a sanding pad and then polish it like I did to my Sunbeam Alpine?

Cooling system pressure
Picked up my 320i after the engine swap last Wednesday and it's faster than I ever imagined - I might just leave it as an Eta as I love the way it delivers huge torque from idling speed. It's stupendously fast! One thing worrying me is that the cooling system seems to hold pressure for a long time, ...

Speedtouch re the handling the back end grip is superb, won't even start to twitch even in the wet! I just wish I could stop the atrocious understeer and general lack of front end grip in the wet. Re: 325 ecu in a 320
Just thought I'd add to this... I have just fitted a 325i afm and 3 bar fuel press regulator to my 320i, which already has a 325i throttle body and a mild speedtouch chip - She really responded well to the afm and fpr and now flies, with a lovely deep induction growl and further improved response an...

Eta with 325i ECU
Will an eta engine run reasonably and more important safely with a 325i ecu, afm, fpr & injectors but with eta inlet manifold and head? Reason I ask is that water pump on my 320i is about to go and as I will need to put a new one into the eta block I thought it might be the right time to drop the et...

Re: Fast Idle
If I was in this situation my first port of call would be to adjust/replace the tps. I've found it really easy to just remove the throttle body from the inlet manifold (you'd ideally get a new gasket which is only a few pence from BMW), and it's then really easy to adjust the tps. If after adjusting...

Check the number on the ECU - If it's a 154 you've got a 'super' eta, should also have a toothed harmonic balancer at the front pulley cos they were equipped with Motronic 1.1

What year is your car? Fault codes only available on E30's equipped with Motronic 1.1 & 1.3, from around 1987 I think.

Re: Throttle body ???
No! Those two ports should be connected to two hoses that lead to a non return valve which in turn connects to the single hose that goes to the master cylinder servo. I'm sure someone here will have one lying around or you could try a breakers yard, and a good idea is to use a bit of sealing compoun...

Re: 325e
I'm just going to stick with the standard 320i camshaft as I don't really see the point of spending £x00 on a sports cam that will increase emissions and decrease low down shove and I might even just use the 731 head as it is complete with standard valves and 320i inlet manifold. Should be picking t...

Well the plan is to do a straight swap and drop the eta engine in as it is (with a longer diff) and once the 2.0 engine is out I can take the 731 head off to fit 325i valves and shape the inlet ports to match a 325i inlet manifold If I like the way the 3er drives as a 325e I might just not bother wi...

Re: What are these two plugs for?
One of the connectors has a pin for idle speed increase with air con on (I've used this pin to increase idle when my cooling fan is on high speed), and one of them is for auto cars to raise or lower the idle whilst engaging or disengaging gear. I think the connection you mention is something to do w...

That's what happened to my old girl ('89 320i). Nothing to worry about as now your engine is running at the correct operating temperature and no doubt reaching that temp alot quicker, as mine did.
My average MPG also went up from 33 to 34 when I changed the 'stat.
