323i Cold Start Valve 'blanking' parts
My '85 323i is currently leaking air from the place where I believe earlier versions of the engine had a 'cold start valve'. It's currently plugged with a short rubber hose with a bolt in it - I'm guessing someone's 'quick fix' at some point - but the hose has split a bit and I can hear the air leak...

Re: cabin leaks
Good work - did you take any pictures as you fixed the front leaks? It's something I need to tackle on mine - I've taken to keeping it in the garage almost all the time now, as I noticed the front wells becoming damp after some heavy rain. Planning to take the carpet out and do the hosepipe test in ...

Re: Temp sensors issue after rocker gasket change m20b23
My thinking was that the route from the sensors to gauge went like: Temp sensors linked to C191 > C191 links to C101 > C101 links to the gauge So I guess my understanding was that the 'pin 4 test' indicated that the issue was somewhere between the c101 and the gauge. Am I off the mark on that? I cou...

Re: Temp sensors issue after rocker gasket change m20b23
So, having hopefully done the test correctly (short length of wire between pin 4 and a tower strut nut) the result is that the gauge doesn't move. Which I guess means there's trouble somewhere between the c101 and the gauge. I don't think the brass nut on the back of the cluster will be the issue - ...

Re: Temp sensors issue after rocker gasket change m20b23
Also, for the benefit of anyone searching this topic later, I've found a different diagram of the c101 which more closely matches my car (I just seem to have a couple of extra wires - locations 2 and 15):

Re: Temp sensors issue after rocker gasket change m20b23
OK - all fuses check out fine with the multimeter. Have read through the link posted and am trying to follow the troubleshooting notes. My c101 is slightly different to the diagram posted in the C101 wiki page - I have 19 pins rather than the 17 on the diagram - and although the general concept of t...

Re: Temp sensors issue after rocker gasket change m20b23
Thanks for the reply Build date shows up on a VIN decoder as 1985-01-03 (I'm unsure if that date format means 1st March or 3rd Jan though!). I've tried disconnecting the wires going to the two sensors, cleaned up the connectors and pushed them back on, so hopefully they are seated correctly. I do ow...

Temp sensors issue after rocker gasket change m20b23
Hi So, following up on my last post, I completed putting things back together after changing the rocker gasket... well, I think I did.... I'd figured I'd give the rocker cover a quick refurb while it was off, and while removing it I made a mental note of which connection points would benefit from sa...

Hi So I needed to replace a rocker gasket - upon removing the rocker cover I discovered that one of the pipes from it was split - no.4 on this diag: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=1172-EUR-01-1985-E30-BMW-323i&diagId=11_0533 I think that's what's commonly referred to as the rocker cov...

Re: New M52 "Restomod" E30 Project - SPANNER RASH
Calypso red really suits a facelift IMO - gets me all misty eyed about one of my first E30s which, even though it was a lowly, slightly shabby 318i on nasty pina reps (I had a lot to learn), still has a place in my heart as the car that got me into working on my car for myself (with the help of the ...

I'm obviously being a bit of dunce with RealOEM - I can't seem to find the part number for a connector holder I need to replace in my engine bay - any pointers? It's this part (pic shamelessly nicked from bss's amazing M3 thread)

Re: fao those running m1.3 on a prefacelift car.
Come on.... If the insurance co even bothered to inspect the car they'd be looking at induction kits, body kits, alloys, colourful suspension and any other obvious non oem parts. Unless its worth m3 money they'll never bother digging around. Yep, but once they've spotted any obvious mods they're bo...

Re: fao those running m1.3 on a prefacelift car.
I just declared it as an uprated engine management system. The way I looked at it was that you're expected to inform them if you're not using a standard chip, and on a high comp engine the facelift chip/ECU isn't standard.

Re: pre facelift coupe electric windows help
Electric window regulators are specific to either pre or post facelift - you'll need the right ones for the job. Prefacelift ones are rarer, so are generally harder to find and a bit more expensive. Try posting up a request in the 'Wanted' section of the forum.

Re: can anyone do this???
By my calculations, the owner of this car could splash out on a new set of windscreen wipers, some additional wing mirrors, a nice shiny grille, a bonnet badge and two different wheels, and hey presto - he could drive down the road in reverse and people would think he had a Bentley. Two cars for the...

M52 = 2.8 (24 valve)
M20s came in a variety of flavours: 2.0, 2.3, 2.5 and 2.7 - although only the first three were available in UK E30s.

Nicely done getting the remains of the old ones out - as Lee says, the new ones actually don't need lots of pressure to get them in as long as they're well lubed up (nothing near the pressure required to get them out at any rate)! Well worth giving it a shot installing them with a trolley jack.

Check fuse 17. It's worth noting that if other things are affected (heater, for example) then it may be a problem with the wiring at the starter motor.
