Re: De-chrome trim
OOps, forgot one important bit - the new strip from dealer just clips to the gutter, but mine was a bit of a sloppy fit. I needed to (very carefully) squeeze the strip together (its sort of a U section) so that it gripped the gutter rail securely.

Re: De-chrome trim
My 320i came with factory de-chrome - one of the roof gutter strips fell off, and I got a new one from the stealer - not cheap, though, around £45 for the long roof gutter strip, plus the small clip which fixes it to the join of the rear strip. Unless you are lucky enough to find a de-chrome E30 a...

Thanks, Brian - from your (vast) experience, are we usually talking engine output shaft seal, g/box imput seal or both? - if they're easy to replace, I'll do em both at same time. Obviously need to know what to order before box out time.

Re: gearbox - need HELP guys!
Update, guys & gals - I tried the gears with engine off last night - oops, they all go in perfectly! :? - I guess this means its defo the clutch dragging. there is absolutely no clutch slip at any time, but I have noticed gear engagement getting harder during driving. Hmmm - I,m gonna have to change...

Box oil new and up to correct level. Bled all old fluid out of clutch slave cylinder and replaced with new. Checked that release arm moves as soon as pedal depressed, but still same problem.

Re: please, urget help, replacing rear brake pads
Iirc, you should only need to remove one of the allen bolts completely, and maybe slacken the other one off a bit. You should then be able swing the caliper assembly out to get at and change pads. Its a while since I did mine, but I'm pretty sure you dont need to remove the 17mm hex bolts. (They bol...

Won't go in to gear!!
Having problems with gear engagement on my 320i. When cold, i.e. first thing in the morning, car will NOT go in to reverse. Got to try several forward gears to find one that will engage, then move car forward a tiny amount. then able to engage reverse. Car has short shift fitted, but there is a litt...

Re: Rear Braking system leak
Just a thought - have the drums or shoes been replaced? - the only possible thing I can think of is if the drum is hopelessly worn, with very worn brake shoes, and the automatic brake adjusters are siezed up (common problem). In this (extreme) situation, the slave cylinder may have to push it's pist...

Re: Rear Braking system leak
where is the leak from ? - if it's from a rigid-flexi connection, the tapered sealing point on the connector could be damaged, i.e. won't seat properly, so leaks under braking pressure. If it's caliper seals, and you've replaced the whole system 3 times, then take the calipers back and demand your m...

Re: Loweing to what level? What size and make springs to us
I've got a 320i 4 dr saloon, with tired suspension when I got it. I bought a Koni gas shock/spring set that lowers 40mm all round. Ride is a bit hard, but handling is superb. wheels/rubber are 15 inch BBS cross-spokes, which I think look great, sitting on Bridgestone Potenza 205/55/R15 tyres. My tyr...

Rigid rear brake hoses - why so many??
When installing new rear Goodridge hoses (see my post on welding nighmare), I couldn't undo the flexi to rigid unions over the rear axle carrier. the pipes were rusted to b**gery anyway, so I decided to modify the brake pipe system. Basically, the brake hydraulic pipe arrives at the back end, where ...

Welding nightmare - do NOT do this!
Had to weld new exhaust hanger bracket to n/s rear wheel arch. Cleaned up welding area, looking for earthing point. Too lazy to grind a clean area off, so decided to use the rear disc as earth point. Got a 'spark' when touching Mig, so assumed all ok. Did a sh**ty weld of new bracket, saw smoke from...

Re: anyone ever changed a vent pipe??
Hi, Tobias - no, you don't need to drop the tank to change the vent pipe - I was just burbling about my c*ock up connecting pipes the wrong way round. If your set up is like mine, changing the corroded metal pie should be easy(ish!). The vent pipe only goes up around 75mm at the back before it is jo...

Re: anyone ever changed a vent pipe??
This pipe goes from expansion tank to n/s of engine bay. All it does, as far as I can tell, is allow air from expansion tank to escape, but why it is routed all the way to the engine bay, I don't know? See my post on changing fuel tank - warning, cos I mixed up the fuel return and this breather wher...

Replacing fuel tank - WARNING!!
Filler neck on my 320i corroded away, got new tank. followed BadDave's excellent tech forum instructions, except for one thing. He said mark fuel pipes if needed. I didn't, or so I thought. Finished job, started car, all seemed ok. Five minutes later, petrol p**sing out of rubber pipe under bonnet -...

Re: new handbrake cable trouble
Did you buy the rear disc handbrake cables? Handbrake cables are different for drums and discs. I did the rear disc conversion on my 320i, and the handbrake cables are fine. IIRC the old drum cables were longer than the new disc cables. Don't expect miracles with handbrake on rear discs - my pet mec...

Compression test will tell you 1) If piston rings/bore are worn 2) If cylinders have very different compression readings, it will tell you which ones are most worn 3) if valves are worn/not seating properly (hmmm - maybe it's leakdown test that checks this ?) Anyway, if you have worn pistons/rings/b...

If you're looking for a 63 litre tank (with two level sender holes) then no-one seems to have them in stock at present. Both GSF and ECP have the single-sender 55 litre tank in stock.

Hi - had similar problem on my 320i - when cruising 70 ish on light throttle, got a slight whine on throttle lift-off. Disappeared as soon as throttle applied, not audible below 50-ish. Diff oil was clean, very little backlash. Changed to re-con diff off Zoner, done only 12,000 miles. Problem solved...

Many thanks, guys - makes sense. I have just looked on my ETK disc, and if I'm reading it right, the earlier 55 litre tank has only one hole in it, the 63 litre has two.
