E23

The E23 is the first generation 7 Series and came into production in 1977 and was replaced by the E32 in 1987. The E23 replaced the E3 as the luxury saloon in the BMW range.

In the UK all E23s were fitted with M30 engine, most of these were fuel injected and used either the Bosch L-Jetronic or later on the Bosch Motronic system, however for the first couple of years of production the 728 and the 730 used a Solex four-barrel carburetor, these were replaced by the 728i.

The E23 offered a real leap in sophistication as it was the first model to feature service interval indicators, a 'check control' that alerted the driver to various system faults, and complex climate control systems. On-board computers and anti-lock braking system (ABS) were optional on early models but later became standard features.

To add to the luxurious feel further optional extras were available, leather upholstery, real wood trim, power seats, heated seats, power windows, power mirrors, manual and of course automatic transmissions and most surpisingly from 1985 drivers air bag.

There was a facelifting of the range in 1983 with alterations made to the grilles, valance, bumpers, dashboard, dials and rear suspension were the notable changes. This was also the time when Bosch Motronic was introduced.

These are becoming increasingly rare nowadays due to expensive running costs and a very small following. As with many other cars from this period they have suffered with rust despite being solidly built.
