The S62 engine is a high performance version of the M62 engine manufactured by the M-Division at the Dingolfing assembly plant and was fitted to the E39 M5 and E52 Z8 along with a couple of Ascari's, one of which is still in production. BMW used this engine from 1998 to 2003. It shares its basic architecture, including aluminium block, with the M62 engines.

These engines are also known as S62B50 due to the 4941cc displacement. This was actually the first BMW V8 engine to feature Vanos on both the inlet and outlet camshaft which happen to be hollow. As with all previous M-Division engines this one was fitted with Individual Throttle Bodies but these were now electronically controlled which allowed differing throttle responses to be selected, "normal" and "sport" settings were available for the driver. Bosch Motronic version MSS 52 is used to control fuel injection, ignition timing and other function. The S62 also uses a double row timing chain as per the M60.

The S62 engine produces 294 kW (394 hp) at 6600 rpm and 500 N·m (369 lb·ft) at 3800 rpm.
