E30 Cassette Holder To Deep Storage Compartment Modification. Smithy318i

Are you thinking about getting rid of your center console cassette holders? I don't blame you. (who uses cassettes these days anyway?)

This is a simple to follow guide, to covert that nasty cassette holder into a deep storage compartment.

YOU WILL NEED:

   * Your original rear center console section with cassette holders.
   * Any spare piece of plastic (the top glovebox trim panel is ideal)
   * hacksaw and file (or dremel type tool)
   * Hot melt glue
   * cigarette lighter

TO REMOVE:

 1.) Remove the rubber boot from around the handbrake lever.
 2.) Remove the rear center console by removing the rear ashtray and nut that attaches the console to the chassis.
 3.) Slide each of the cassette holders from the holder surround.
 4.) Unclip the cassette holder assembly from the center console.
 5.) draw round the outline of your storage compartment.
 6.) and cut it out.
 7.) Cut out the locating notches.
 8.) Fit the lower panel.
 9.) Heat up the plastic tabs and bend them over.
 10.) Now glue (or melt) the lower panel to the surround.
 11.) Refit the storage tray in the center console.
 12.) Now refit the surround to the car, and fill it with whatever you like.
 13.) you may wish to attach a piece of foam padding to the base of the storage compartment, to prevent it from rattling.
