History
When it became clear that South Africa would not be getting the M3, the 325iS was created. Initially this was merely a [[]325i]] 2-door fitted with a body kit and a close-ratio gearbox (improving acceleration at the expense of top speed and economy) similar to a UK specification sport.
Some things the 325IS shared with the E30 M3 was the front suspension and rear brake set up , all 325is Evo I were 145kw engines. The cylinder heads were standard 325 units.
Body panels were part steel part aluminium. The bonnet, boot lid and doors were all Alu, while the rest of the shell was steel.
Other enhancements were sport seats (early editions had Cloth) and a M-Tech Sports steering wheel. All 325is models had 5 hole hubs. Unlike the 333i where the options were fog lights or [{Aircon|Air Conditioning]] , all 325is's were fitted with both.
EVO II
To keep the South African 325i competitive in saloon racing (nevertheless, these cars were always sold to the public) The 325iS was enhanced into the 325iS Evo II of late 1991.
The M20 engine grew to 2.7 L and now produced 155 kW (210 hp)and a 0-62 mph in a mere 7.5sec. The engine was based on the 2.7L Alpina engine however was built by BMW SA.
The enhancements on the engine were down to BMW SA using selected heads from Alpina direct as well as using Alpina pistons. Externally the throttle body was larger as well a 535i AFM being used to extract more power. The EVO II also has a slightly longer duration cam shaft, this meant at idle it was possible to hear the difference between and EVO I and EVO II.
Externally you could easily tell an EVO I from and EVO II by 3 features.
All EVO II's had a underbody splitter, this looks like a small black lip along the front spolier, but it was not cosmetic and ran from the front spoiler too the wheels, it helped smooth the airflow under the body.
The second enhancement was a slighlty lower set of springs, all 325is Evo I and II used Bilstein dampers. The EVO II was a full 10mm lower then an EVO I. All cars were fitted with BBS X Spoke wheels.
The third feature was the addition of rear headrests , however very last models were fitted with sunroofs as well.
There is believed to be only 1 Evo II model in the UK.
